Lewis Koumas has spoken about his surprise call-up to the Liverpool first team following his top-flight bow at St James’ Park on Sunday.
The young attacker entered the action from the substitutes’ bench in the 78th minute of the encounter with Newcastle United and played a role in helping the Merseyside club rescue a point in an entertaining 2-2 stalemate.
This marked the 20-year-old’s first appearance for the club since finding the net during his initial outing in the FA Cup versus Southampton back in February 2024, having also been among the replacements without being called upon in the League Cup final triumph over Chelsea shortly afterwards.
The Wales international subsequently spent time developing his game through temporary moves to Stoke City, Birmingham City and Hull City in the second tier, accumulating close to 100 matches across those stints.
Koumas caught the eye during pre-season when deployed on the right flank by incoming head coach Andoni Iraola, with Liverpool anticipated to reach a verdict close to next Tuesday’s transfer window closure regarding whether to sanction another temporary switch or retain the promising player within the senior setup.
When questioned whether his Premier League debut had shifted his perspective on his immediate plans, the forward indicated his belief that he possesses the capability to influence matches at this level.
Securing his first appearance in the competition represents the pinnacle of his career thus far, and he described the moment as deeply emotional. He reflected that reaching this point brought back memories of his mother’s dedication in ensuring he could attend every training session possible during his formative years. He recalled travelling from Crewe to Tranmere with his mother doing everything possible to support his development, and expressed gratitude towards her for enabling him to compete at this stage, describing it as a joyful family occasion particularly pleased she could witness it.
Victor Munoz, also introduced from the bench, secured the crucial spot-kick which Dominik Szoboszlai tucked away in the 99th minute to complete the comeback.
Koumas remarked to LFC TV that such situations are precisely why experienced players are relied upon, stating that when victory proved unattainable, they managed to salvage a draw through character and determination. He noted Szoboszlai’s willingness to assume responsibility for the penalty and described the strike as executed with precision, securing a valuable point away from home as they look ahead to the following week. He concluded that under the floodlights in a high-pressure scenario, there was no-one else he would prefer to see take it.
