Milos Kerkez has received a clear message that he must demonstrate his abilities at Liverpool this campaign
The Hungarian international joined the Reds from Bournemouth last year in a £40m transfer and displaced Andy Robertson as Arne Slot’s preferred left-back option, featuring in 34 top-flight matches during his debut season at Anfield.
However, the club endured a challenging year overall, suffering 20 defeats across all competitions and 12 in the league, which ultimately led to Slot’s departure at the conclusion of May.
Slot’s replacement, Andoni Iraola, previously coached Kerkez during his transformation into a £40m Premier League player while at Bournemouth. Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson believes the upcoming season represents a pivotal moment for the full-back.
Johnson suggested to SeatPin that Kerkez must silence his critics this term. He noted the defender excelled at Bournemouth but found things harder at Liverpool. While glimpses of quality were visible periodically, Johnson believes consistent high-level performances are essential. The arrival of Iraola should benefit Kerkez considerably, as the new manager understands his strengths and how to maximise his potential. Johnson fully anticipates significant improvement from the player. Should he fail to deliver, Johnson feels excuses would be difficult to find, and progress this year is essential.
Johnson, who logged 200 appearances across six seasons at Liverpool between 2009 and 2015, has also expressed confidence in Ngumoha’s continued progression.
Should Cody Gakpo depart Anfield, Johnson believes it would present an excellent chance for Ngumoha to establish himself as a regular first-team option this season. The youngster was already making his presence felt last term regardless of the competition for places. With reduced alternatives now available, opportunities should arise. Though typically deployed on the left, Johnson thinks playing on the right flank could provide Ngumoha with substantial minutes. Switching wings should pose minimal difficulty for such a talented young player still developing his game. Stepping beyond his comfort zone could further enhance his abilities. Ngumoha demonstrated remarkable form at various points last season, delivering outstanding displays. Johnson expects his playing time to increase further this year and views it as potentially his breakthrough campaign.
