The defender has spoken about his pain from the abusive messages he received after leaving the club and how he still makes sure to catch every Liverpool match possible.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has spoken about his experiences since departing Liverpool and the toxic online reaction that followed his exit from the Reds last summer. The Scouse full-back was a beloved figure at Anfield until his contract ran out and he moved to the Spanish champions.
He was removed from the first-choice lineup and spent time on the substitutes bench towards the conclusion of the campaign before finalising his switch to the Spanish capital. He has now shared details in a conversation with the Mirror about his encounters with online harassment and his assertion that Liverpool will forever hold a special place in his life.
The 27-year-old stated that the broader consequences of cyberbullying represent a significant problem and one he believes requires action from both legislators and tech firms.
He mentioned that regarding threats and coordinated attacks on social media platforms and the effect such behaviour can have on people’s psychological wellbeing, this constitutes a genuine subject worthy of discussion. However, he believes resolving these matters falls to governments and technology companies. He explained that he has taken steps to shield himself from such content as much as he can, though he acknowledges this is not achievable for everyone.
He also mentioned that since relocating to Real Madrid, he has travelled back to Liverpool on multiple occasions to see relatives. While going about his travels, he has encountered numerous fellow Liverpudlians and supporters of the club. He emphasised that none of his face-to-face interactions have resembled the kind of vitriol encountered online or on social platforms, which helps him separate the two. He clarified this does not imply that every Liverpool resident approved of his departure from the club, as he understands they did not. However, he pointed out that disapproval differs significantly from the behaviour that extends beyond football-related matters. This perspective prevents him from becoming overly affected or dwelling on negative comments.
Trent, who spent his formative years in the city and represented the club on 259 occasions after joining as a six-year-old, maintained that his affection for Liverpool Football Club remains unchanged.
He still tunes in to every fixture, supports the team, hopes to see them succeed and finds pleasure in watching them. He emphasised that Liverpool will always occupy a special place in his heart regardless of circumstances. He described it as his home, the location that provided him with the chances to pursue his career and where his deep affection will always remain.
Since departing his hometown, Trent has been subjected to numerous offensive messages that he felt crossed acceptable boundaries. He stated that online harassment and threats transmitted through private messages or other channels represent a regrettable aspect of life in 2026 for individuals in the public eye who generate significant media coverage. He chooses to keep such content away from his direct experience because it does not feel authentic to him.
He added that he can put this into proper perspective by recognising it does not reflect the football club he holds dear or his native city.
When he returned to Anfield for Liverpool’s Champions League encounter with Real Madrid, Alexander-Arnold faced jeering from supporters when he entered the field as a substitute during the closing stages of the game.
He stated that the whistling and expressions of displeasure from Liverpool fans represent something he is entirely prepared to deal with and can comprehend in his own way. He noted that he was aware during that time that Liverpool supporters did not appreciate being instructed how to think or feel, and he agreed with this sentiment. However, he expressed hope that eventually there might be some appreciation for the choices he wished to make regarding his own future. He explained that the experience stings because of everything he contributed to the club over two decades and the sacrifices he made during that period. Therefore, the disappointment, and even the anger expressed through jeering, is entirely understandable to him.
Beyond the animosity shown inside the stadium, graffiti reading rat was repeatedly sprayed across a mural honouring Trent in the vicinity. A friend forwarded him the image and it played on his thoughts when he came back to the city for the fixture.
He mentioned that returning to Liverpool after these events was present in his thoughts, along with noting how his family members were also distressed. He candidly admitted that when something affects and upsets him, his family feels the impact as well because they share the experience together.
Trent described finding the entire occasion difficult to comprehend, including how even the idea of entering the away dressing room felt peculiar since he had never previously set foot in there.
Trent was excluded from the England selection when Thomas Tuchel’s squad travelled for the World Cup.
He revealed he was aware the telephone calls were taking place. Other players he knew had received their calls the previous day. He confessed he was filled with optimism. When the call came through, he was at his residence in Madrid with some family members visiting, and he retreated to his bedroom to take it. When he ended the call, he was completely devastated. He had made no arrangements for his summer because he anticipated being part of the squad.
He believed his performances during the latter part of the campaign had been sufficient to warrant selection and he was furious about the rejection.
He expressed hope that the coaching staff would expect and comprehend that he felt anger about the situation. He maintained he wants to play for England and is determined to do so. He believes the manager would respect that the decision caused him significant pain and would prefer this response to him feeling indifferent about it.
That pain feels particularly sharp given the intense rivalry Trent has encountered throughout his international career.
He noted that his generation has featured many exceptional right-backs and that significant competition exists at the position, with managers selecting whoever they believe fits the team best. This has not typically been his experience so far. However, he intends to channel this as motivation to push himself forward.
Unlike other players who have publicly voiced their frustrations after being overlooked, Trent believed there was little benefit to be gained from making complaints.
He suggested certain matters do not require public discussion. He believed everyone would have recognised his disappointment. However, making statements in public would not alter the manager’s decision. The decision has been made and cannot be changed. Life continues regardless.
Trent followed England’s progress throughout the World Cup and maintained that his omission has done nothing to reduce his commitment to representing his nation.
He declared that until he retires, he remains an England player regardless of selection status, and he will always be available when required. He stated there is no greater privilege.
Rather than allowing the rejection to overwhelm him, Trent intends to channel these emotions to work his way back into Tuchel’s considerations.
