Scotland captain Andy Robertson is set to make his first return to Anfield on Tuesday evening when Tottenham Hotspur travel to Merseyside for a third-round Carabao Cup encounter.
The fixture marks the left-back’s first appearance at his former club since departing during the summer transfer window.
Robertson established himself as a modern legend during his nine-year spell at Liverpool, collecting eight major trophies during that period.
The defender departed Anfield seeking regular first-team opportunities after finding himself behind Milos Kerkez in the left-back pecking order during his final campaign on Merseyside.
Tottenham secured Robertson’s signature following his Liverpool exit.
The 30-year-old has featured in three of Tottenham’s opening four Premier League fixtures this season, emerging as one of the club’s more consistent performers during a difficult start to the campaign.
Former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton, who represented Scotland alongside Robertson, believes the experienced full-back possesses the qualities required to manage Liverpool in the future.
Hutton suggested that Robertson’s tactical understanding and dedication indicate a natural pathway towards a coaching career.
Robertson announced in April his intention to conclude his Liverpool tenure at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.
Prior to his eventual move to Tottenham, the defender nearly joined the north London club during the January transfer window.
Talks also took place with Atletico Madrid during the summer of 2025.
Liverpool have not sought a direct replacement for Robertson, instead relying on Kostas Tsimikas to provide competition for Kerkez.
Tsimikas endured a difficult afternoon during Saturday’s goalless draw with Fulham at Anfield.
Kerkez himself has struggled to recapture the form that characterised his previous spell at Bournemouth.
Hutton expressed surprise that Liverpool permitted Robertson to leave without receiving a transfer fee.
The former Scotland international emphasised that experience remains valuable regardless of a club’s transfer expenditure, describing the club’s handling of the situation as unusual.
Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi has indicated that significant rotation could occur for the Anfield fixture, with Robertson potentially beginning the match among the substitutes.
Tottenham have collected no victories from their opening four matches and are yet to score in the league this season.
