Liverpool’s new signing Florian Wirtz will be aiming to make an instant impression when the Reds kick off their top-flight campaign against Newcastle this weekend.
Former Anfield defender Jamie Carragher has suggested the coming months represent a pivotal period for the German playmaker. The pundit has argued that the 23-year-old must demonstrate he justifies his substantial fee rather than simply functioning as competent rotation option.
The talented midfielder found things difficult during a disappointing last term for the then-reigning English champions. The Merseyside club secured the highly sought-after creative player from the Bundesliga side, having chosen him over French attacker Rayan Cherki, who eventually moved to Manchester City.
Across 33 league matches, Wirtz contributed five goals and four assists, alongside one strike and four helpers in European competition. While his technical ability and vision were evident, his contributions failed to match Liverpool’s attacking difficulties.
Carragher wrote in his column that Wirtz faces a crucial campaign, with more than just his Anfield future hanging in the balance as he attempts to properly establish himself in English football.
English football requires Wirtz to thrive alongside Andoni Iraola, Liverpool’s new manager. He has resembled a decent squad signing worth roughly £40m rather than a transformative talent costing £115m. Given the impact on the team and the club’s hopes of bouncing back after a difficult year, Wirtz must deliver like a top-level Liverpool performer. Last season he was given considerable time to prove himself. This campaign that luxury likely won’t exist.
Failing to do so would embarrass the club that invested heavily in a player they believed would symbolise a bright future, and would probably reinforce the pattern of talented forwards considering Spain and Germany better suited to their abilities.
Liverpool saw off competition from City and Bayern Munich to land Wirtz. The youngster arrived on Merseyside in excellent form, less than two years after guiding Leverkusen to an unbeaten league campaign and the German championship.
In the two seasons before joining Liverpool, he reached double figures in goal contributions with 11 goals and 12 assists during 2023/24, followed by 10 goals and 13 assists in his final season in Germany.
Following the pre-season 3-2 loss to Monaco, Wirtz spoke about his desire to improve. He stated his focus was on enhancing his own performance and helping the team, rather than dwelling on his importance. His aim was to become the best version of himself and contribute to winning silverware.
He noted that after a year in English football, he understood the different approach compared to Germany. He felt more prepared for his second season and was looking forward to it.
Regarding the new manager’s philosophy, Wirtz mentioned that Iraola has his own footballing ideas and the squad would work on implementing them more.
