The 23-year-old midfielder’s two-decade stay at the Merseyside club is approaching its conclusion following an agreement reached with the Italian outfit on Wednesday evening.
The academy product is scheduled to travel to Milan for a medical examination ahead of Inter’s Serie A campaign opener against Monza on Saturday.
The Serie A champions have pursued Jones throughout the summer transfer window after seeing an initial approach in January turned down by Liverpool, who were intent on retaining all their established first-team players at that stage.
The transfer package comprises a guaranteed £25m with additional payments worth £5m, while the selling club has secured a sell-on clause of 10 percent for the player now 25 years old.
Inter had a bid of approximately £21m dismissed by the Anfield hierarchy in June, with talks appearing to have broken down completely due to the significant gap between the two clubs’ valuations. However, the Italian side came back with an enhanced proposal last month while Liverpool were conducting their pre-season preparations in America.
The club made contact through intermediaries to indicate their willingness to offer £30m, leading to a breakthrough earlier this week.
Jones participated in training with his teammates on Wednesday before making arrangements to depart for Italy to complete his medical and finalize the transfer formalities.
The new head coach had expressed his desire last month for the lifelong fan to remain at the club he grew up supporting and commit his future to a new contract. However, Jones, who was born in the city centre, is seeking a new opportunity and additional playing minutes.
The club were hesitant to allow another prominent player to depart without compensation following the end-of-season exits of Ibrahima Konate, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, especially considering Jones’s age and potential resale value.
Under Arne Slot last term, Jones made only 16 Premier League starts, with several of those came towards the end of the season when he was deployed as an emergency right-back option.
The academy graduate made his first senior appearance in January 2019 at age 17 during an FA Cup loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers and departs Anfield having accumulated 228 appearances across all competitions.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool intend to bring in a more seasoned midfielder to fill the void or afford 19-year-old Trey Nyoni greater opportunities after an impressive pre-season showing under the new manager.
