Liverpool omit injured Chiesa and Endo from Champions League squad

UEFA has published Liverpool’s 25-man A List squad for the Champions League league phase, with two senior figures notably absent from the registration list.

Forward Federico Chiesa and midfielder Wataru Endo have both been excluded from the squad submitted to European football’s governing body.

The Italian international’s omission marks the second consecutive campaign in which he has been left out of Liverpool’s European roster.

Chiesa sustained his current injury setback during pre-season preparations and has not featured since.

His compatriot Giovanni Leoni, who was brought into the squad last term following a serious knee ligament injury sustained on his debut appearance in September of the previous year, has been registered despite remaining unavailable for selection.

The young defender is anticipated to resume training during the upcoming international break and could feature in Champions League fixtures before the end of the calendar year.

Conor Bradley and Hugo Ekitike have also been included in the squad despite recovering from lengthy injury lay-offs.

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill provided an update on his captain’s rehabilitation, stating that the defender was progressing as anticipated but required careful management given the nature of his injury.

O’Neill added that Bradley had recently become a father, which had added other considerations to his recovery.

The national team coach expressed confidence that the player would join up with the squad once fully fit.

Liverpool will begin their European campaign at Anfield against Atletico Madrid, with subsequent fixtures against LASK, Villarreal, Fenerbahce, Club Brugge, Porto, Inter Milan and Lens comprising the remaining league phase matches.

The club’s registered squad includes goalkeepers Alisson, Mamardashvili, Woodman and Jaros; defenders Gomez, Van Dijk, Jacquet, Kerkez, Bradley, Leoni, Tsimikas, Frimpong, Araujo, Chambers and Mabaya; midfielders Wirtz, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Munoz, Gravenberch and McConnell; and forwards Isak, Gakpo, Ekitike and Barcola.

UEFA regulations permit clubs to register a maximum of 25 List A players for the Champions League, with a minimum of eight positions required to be allocated to homegrown or locally trained athletes.

List B registrations must be submitted no later than 23:59 CET on the day preceding each match, with eligibility open to players born on or after January 1, 2005, or those meeting specific club tenure requirements.

Prospects including Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni are expected to feature among Liverpool’s List B entries.
