Liverpool forward Jayden Danns made his comeback for the U21 side in Friday night’s match at Everton following an extended spell on the sidelines.
Danns entered the fray just after the 60-minute mark to make his first appearances of the campaign during the Premier League 2 curtain-raiser against Everton at Goodison Park.
The 20-year-old forward sustained a severe hamstring problem last September and then experienced a complication during his recovery attempt in March before suffering another hamstring issue at the start of last month, which prevented him from getting senior team minutes during pre-season training.
The Reds have one remaining U21 fixture at home against Leeds United next Sunday, with the transfer window shutting its doors two days afterward, and the club is evaluating whether Danns would be better served by securing regular first-team opportunities at another club over the coming months.
U21s manager Rob Page stated that Danns requires match practice but that his appearance at Everton would certainly prove beneficial for his development.
Page noted that Danns has demonstrated impressive fitness levels during training sessions and that facing a local derby away at Goodison Park presented a challenging environment for his comeback. Page indicated Danns was eager to get on the pitch and that his current condition appears positive.
Page added that with Danns now having accumulated some playing time, discussions can now take place regarding the next phase of his development, with a collective decision to be made that serves the player’s best interests.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old forward Will Wright, who found the net in the 1-1 stalemate with Everton, appears unlikely to depart on loan. Wright had been involved with the senior squad during the American pre-season tour and had previously been on the first-team bench during the previous campaign.
Page explained that should the right loan opportunity arise at a suitable club where Wright can maximise his potential, such a move would not be dismissed. However, Page suggested that for Wright’s progression, remaining with the club might prove more advantageous at this stage, though the situation remains uncertain.
Page continued by stating that the objective of development coaches is to ensure these players gain experience in competitive matches, preferably at senior level where possible.
Page cited Kieran Morrison as a successful example, noting that the player has enjoyed an excellent 12 months and is now featuring regularly for Sheffield Wednesday in League One. Page expressed hope that Morrison can continue that momentum and emphasised that facilitating similar outcomes for other promising players represents the core mission.
Page also observed that players returning from first-team environments have displayed notable intensity, which provides younger players who have advanced from the under-18s with valuable insight into professional football standards.
Regarding the new first-team manager, Page described Andoni Iraola and his staff as excellent and extremely approachable, noting multiple discussions about the Basque coach’s philosophy, playing identity, and approaches for both attacking and defensive situations. Page expressed enthusiasm for the season ahead.
On Saturday, Liverpool’s under-18 side fought back twice to secure a 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough in the U18 Premier League North fixture at Kirkby, with Finn Inglethorpe netting both goals.
