Shearer unsure if Liverpool will ever see best of £116m Wirtz

Former England captain Alan Shearer has expressed uncertainty over whether Liverpool will see the best form from Florian Wirtz.

The Premier League’s all-time leading scorer also suggested that the intensity of English top-flight football may not suit the attacking midfielder’s style of play.

Wirtz moved to Anfield in June 2025 for an initial fee of £100m, with a further £16m payable to Bayer Leverkusen through specific add-on clauses.

Since his arrival, the Germany international has produced only intermittent displays of his ability.

Liverpool endured a difficult campaign the previous season, suffering 20 defeats across all competitions under Arne Slot.

During that period, Wirtz recorded seven goals and eight assists.

The Reds have started the current season unbeaten under new manager Andoni Iraola, though Shearer has cast doubt on whether Wirtz will recapture the level of performance he showed at Leverkusen, where he earned a reputation as one of the most highly regarded playmakers in European football.

Shearer told Betfair that observers are still waiting to see Wirtz at his peak and have so far witnessed it only in patches, adding that the player has arrived at a time when German football is not at its strongest.
