Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham has said Liverpool forward Alexander Isak could outscore Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and claim the Premier League Golden Boot.
Sheringham, speaking to Hajper, said he had been impressed by Isak’s form since the start of the campaign and outlined why he believes the Sweden international will be a threat to the rest of the division.
The 27-year-old joined Liverpool from Newcastle United in a reported £125m transfer and is into his second season at Anfield.
He has scored four goals so far this term, all in the Premier League, surpassing the three he managed in the top flight during his injury-disrupted first campaign with the club, when he was sidelined for extended periods with a fractured fibula and an ankle problem.
Sheringham said Isak’s goals against Ipswich Town had stood out and described the forward as being back to his sharpest in front of goal.
He praised Isak’s movement inside the penalty area, his ability to finish with either foot and his habit of arriving in the right positions to capitalise on chances, adding that those qualities marked him out as a complete goalscorer.
The former United striker added that he felt last season had not been a fair reflection of Isak’s ability because of fitness issues and tactical disruption at Liverpool, including the use of two centre-forwards, and that the player was now showing his true quality.
Sheringham concluded by saying the attributes Isak has displayed make him a candidate to be regarded as one of the best strikers in the world and a leading contender for the Golden Boot ahead of Haaland.
