Szoboszlai named Liverpool vice-captain after 99th-minute penalty heroics

Dominik Szoboszlai has been named among Virgil van Dijk’s lieutenants at Anfield for the upcoming season, joining goalkeeper Alisson Becker and defender Joe Gomez in the leadership group.

Liverpool required fresh deputies for Van Dijk following Andoni Iraola’s departure to Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer earlier in the summer, and Iraola announced on Friday that a revised command structure is now in place at the club.

The club captain will be supported by experienced shot-stopper Alisson, long-serving full-back Gomez, and Szoboszlai, who was handed an extended contract running until 2031 during the previous month.

The Hungary international spoke after converting a stoppage-time penalty that salvaged a 2-2 stalemate for Liverpool against Newcastle United on Sunday, describing the appointment as recognition for the effort he has invested at the club since his 2023 switch from RB Leipzig for £60 million.

Szoboszlai told NBC Sports that a new manager naturally boosts everyone’s morale, and he views his new position as a chance to demonstrate his desire to be part of the squad and starting eleven. He explained that joining Liverpool with a clear plan to reach the first team, he believes consistent daily application will yield results. The 24-year-old also praised Van Dijk, noting that despite being 35, the Dutchman remains among the world’s elite central defenders, and he considers it a privilege to share a changing room with him.
