Virgil van Dijk has declared his complete faith in Liverpool’s transfer hierarchy to provide Andoni Iraola with the necessary squad depth to challenge across all competitions before the September 1 deadline.
The Netherlands defender led the Merseyside outfit to a 2-2 stalemate against Newcastle United at St James’ Park, with Dominik Szoboszlai converting from twelve yards in the dying moments to snatch a point.
This summer has seen Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz arrive on permanent deals, while Ronald Araujo joined on a season-long loan from the Catalan club, though the search for additional wide options continues.
PSG’s Bradley Barcola remains the primary target, with the European champions seeking approximately £145m for the French international, while Brighton and Hove Albion have rebuffed two approaches for Gambian winger Yankuba Minteh, who is valued at £70m.
The exits of Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah, Curtis Jones and Ibrahima Konate have left the squad with a reduced appearance, with Iraola acknowledging last week that current resources are limited.
Van Dijk stated that he places full confidence in the club’s decision-makers to make appropriate choices. He expressed that the group must demonstrate a response to the previous campaign, emphasising internal motivation rather than external expectations. The defender acknowledged last season’s shortcomings were not acceptable but stressed the focus must now be on future improvement. He expressed hope that within the coming week, the team would be close to meeting Iraola’s vision, noting the extensive hours spent on the training ground would benefit both players and supporters. Van Dijk cautioned against panic given the early stage of the campaign, stating that rapid improvement remains the collective responsibility, with certain changes around the club being evident. He recognised that new management brings new ideas requiring adaptation time, but affirmed the squad’s desire to compete on all four fronts as swiftly as possible.
Szoboszlai fired home a composed penalty with virtually the final touch of the encounter after Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock had scored for the hosts, either side of Cody Gakpo’s leveller.
The Hungarian international now serves as one of three vice-captains under Van Dijk alongside Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez, with the Liverpool skipper confident the midfielder will eventually take the armband at Anfield.
Van Dijk emphasised the importance of the leadership group, noting Szoboszlai’s national captaincy experience would benefit his integration. He highlighted that Szoboszlai has already embraced significant responsibility and demonstrated his quality through previous penalty successes, describing his late spot-kick as evidence of his abilities under pressure.
